Last night, it was confirmed that Jeff Bridges—the Dude himself—and a backup band dubbed the Abiders will headline this year’s Lebowski Fest, the annual L.A. gathering of the cult comedy’s most passionate fans. While sitting down with Bridges’s The Big Lebowski co-star, John Turturro this morning, to discuss his upcoming film Fading Gigolo, we could not help but wonder if the Coen brothers regular had heard the news, and if he had any plans to participate or attend the April 25 event himself.

“Right, I’m not going to do that,” he said, grinning. “I am hoping to maybe somehow explore [my character] again.” When we asked if he was referring to The Big Lebowski spin-off idea he has floated over the years, which would center on his character, the Dude’s flamboyant bowling nemesis and suggested pedophile, Jesus Quintana, he confirmed that he was indeed. “Yeah, we’ll see. I’m talking about it right now. It’s a complicated situation but it is something that interests me [enough to purse] because I played that character for a few scenes. I mean, Jeff got to do his character for the whole movie. I played that character in a play, like that, about 10 years before [the film] and that gave him the idea for that. So I’d love to explore that character.” And if he can’t, he would still love to explore “that kind of character, very much so” in the future.

So if we style our three-piece purple bowling suits just so, then maybe we can will Turturro into revisiting The Big Lebowski’s iconic bowling lanes. Because in real life, the actor isn’t going anywhere near them. When we asked whether it is difficult, even a decade and a half after the film premiered, to get in a game without being recognized, that actor conceded, “It’s not so easy.” But it isn’t too much of a shame for him. “I’m not a great bowler really, anyway. I was getting pretty good then, but I’ve kind of lost the skill.”
